The Heart Behind JustLove Table
You see a family afraid of deportation. A neighbor who can no longer afford rent. A homeless person sleeping under a bridge. A gay teenager who no longer feels welcome at church.
You care. But what can one person do?
A new grassroots effort called JustLove Table begins with a surprisingly simple answer: Pull some other people who care. Sit down together. Share a meal. Talk about what is happening around you. Then decide what you can do together.
Who?
JustLove Table grows out of JustLove Collective, a Christian movement built around the conviction that faith should be measured not only by what people believe, but also by how they treat their neighbors—particularly people who are poor, excluded or pushed to the margins.
The movement emerged largely from within the Seventh-day Adventist community, but welcomes people of different faith backgrounds, spiritual journeys, secular or nonreligious, and people of no faith.
You don’t need to be an activist, theologian or even particularly religious. You need a willingness to care.
What?
A JustLove Table is exactly what the name suggests. People gather around food. It helps a dozen. Then comes the conversation at the heart of JustLove.
Who is being unseen and unheard—and what can we do about it?
The subject might be homelessness, immigration, racism, climate change, LGBTQ+ inclusion or another concern identified by the local group. The conversations aren’t complicated. JustLove Tables are meant for real people, real issues.
Learn. Connect. Act.
Where?
Almost anywhere.
A JustLove Table doesn’t require a church or even a building devoted to religion.
A dozen people in someone’s living room can be a Table. So can 40 people in a community center.
The important thing isn’t the room. It’s who is sitting around the table.
When?
Several times a year.
The plan calls for local Tables to gather roughly six times a year, with the rhythm flexible enough for the Table to become friends and friends to become community.
And what happens between gatherings may be even more important than what happens during them.
That’s when people act.
Why?
Because caring alone can be exhausting. News and social media expose us to suffering all over the world while simultaneously making us wonder whether we can do anything at all to provide healing. It begins not with changing the world but with finding other people in your own community who are willing to choose one small piece of it.
Action creates hope.
How?
The larger JustLove Collective helps local people get started. It provides discussion materials, information about justice issues, spiritual stories, and connections with people doing similar work. Local hosts provide the place, the welcome and knowledge of their own community.
Nobody needs to create a large organization. In fact, the idea is to keep it small, simple and personal—about six to fifteen people around a table is a good place to start.
Maybe that’s how change usually begins.
